leaders designed to help PGA Professionals and
retailers navigate the challenging economy.
“The U.S. and global economy are greatly
impacting the way our industry does business, and
the Education Conference has been built to offer
real solutions in every seminar,” explains Several.
“Proven leaders from several sectors of our industry
will share best practices, strategies and business
models that can have an immediate influence on
building business for those who attend the PGA
Merchandise Show.”
Seminars Parallel Six Career Paths
PGA Member Education Specialist Tom Galvin
and his staff have organized the 2009 Education
Conference by subject matter to coincide with each
of six PGA career paths – General Management,
Golf Operations, Instruction, Retail, Executive
Management and Ownership/Leasing. No education seminar in a specific career path will conflict
with any other seminar in that particular career path,
and all Education Conference seminars will adjourn
by 12: 45 p.m. daily to allow PGA Professionals to
preview all the latest merchandise and attend other
PGA Merchandise Show events. PGA members
receive one MSR credit for each Education Conference seminar they attend.
“Given the state of the economy, it is more imperative than ever that our PGA members continually
update their education and have the competencies
required to remain competitive and to succeed in
the golf industry,” observes Galvin, a PGA Master
Professional. “The Education Conference at the
PGA Merchandise Show is a tremendous opportunity
to catch up on business trends and issues that are
affecting us all in this economy.
“There are more than 100 hours of continuing
education programs scheduled for the Education
Conference, and with all of the seminars scheduled
by career paths, you will never have a conflicting
program or seminar.”
Whether it’s marketing and promotions, management, generating new revenue, recruiting new
club members and retaining current members,
or customer service, Galvin says it’s extremely
important that PGA Professionals supplement
their knowledge with new ideas that can help them
operate their respective operations.
“Corporate America is seeing things today that
we haven’t seen since the early 1930s,” adds Galvin.
“America survived the 1930s and we’ll survive this
(economic downturn), but in the meantime we
need to upgrade our education and training to deal
with the economy as effectively as possible.”
The Education Conference at the 2009 PGA
Merchandise Show will examine issues impacting
PGA Professionals and golf facilities from coast to
coast. Seminars will feature PGA Professionals, PGA
staff members, Association of Golf Merchandisers
(AGM) members, and experts who serve the golf
industry sharing their experience and existing
knowledge on a medley of timely topics.
Paul Metzler, PGA director of consumer marketing, player development and research, will headline a seminar entitled “Golf Economy Update” that
will examine the efforts of leading golf organizations
in conducting industry economic research to
demonstrate golf’s significant financial impact on
the national economy. The seminar will help PGA
members learn how to use economic information
to build relationships and communication channels
with local and state leaders while introducing tools
to assess how the golf economy in localities is
performing on a monthly and annual basis.
PGA consultant Jon Colclasure will focus on
one of the most powerful tools PGA Professionals
have at their disposal to combat the economic
downturn in his Education Conference seminar
