PRIVATE FACILITIES
This monthly installment is intended to educate PGA Professionals about the hottest selling golf shop items across the country. We polled the 2000–09 PGA Section Merchandisers of the Year in the public, private, and resort categories, plus Association of Golf Merchandisers (AGM) members. A summary of the
private facilities’ responses appears below. Please remember that this poll is based on
a limited number of responses and is an informal measure of actual performance.
Editor’s note: Starting with this issue, this page will now include retailing best practices
submitted by past PGA Merchandisers of the Year. The intent of providing these best practices is
to provide all PGA Professionals with new ideas on how to improve their retail operation. If you
are a past MOY winner and would like to submit your best practices, please contact Patrick Cherry
at pcherry@pgamagazine.com.

Retailing Best Practices: Private
Offer Glove and Ball Specials
One quick selling tip I use sometimes to turn merchandise is to have my counter person
offer glove and ball specials to sell multiple units. Most people come in and want a glove
before they play. I tell them it is one for $22 and two for $35. This way they are getting a
break and I am moving more units and creating dollars. I do this with sleeves as well.
People go through gloves faster if they know they have one in the bag ready. It’s just a small
thing I do to move merchandise.
Less Can Be More
We have watched our Open to Buy much closer than in the past. This has helped me
greatly with our cash flow. We are cutting our orders by about 15 percent and doing more
special orders. I think 2010 is going to be much better than 2009, although we actually did
3 percent better in 2009 than in 2008.
