■ PGA Professionals are no strangers to talking
about golf equipment, but Brian Crowell is
about to discuss the latest golf gear with an unusually large audience. Crowell, the PGA head golf professional at
GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford Hills, N. Y., is set to reprise his
role as co-host of the second annual “Golf Digest Equipment
Special” prior to the final round of Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill
Invitational on NBC on Sunday, March 28. Crowell and co-host
Dottie Pepper will highlight the newest innovations in golf
equipment as a way to kick-start the golf season across the
country. Crowell – a regular reader of the M W page – is a multimedia kind of guy, having participated in Golf Magazine’s
Club Test in the past, co-written a book (“Teach Yourself Visually Golf” with fellow PGA Professional Cheryl Anderson) and
hosted radio shows. Be sure to check your local listings and
tune in to see Crowell’s take on this year’s equipment trends.

a must for retailers. But in down times, when shoppers aren’t
buying much, variety can be a burden.” Many PGA Profes-
sionals and golf shop merchandisers have already seized
upon this strategy and streamlined the number of ven-
dors they’re carrying in their shops. Read the story for
yourself to see what retail experts think the implica-
tions are for customers and for the companies that are
now fighting for shelf space.

■ The Golf Plus sec-
tion of Sports Il-
lustrated had an
interesting inter-
view recently with
PGA of America
CEO Joe Sterenka.
SI writer Farrell
Evans talked with
Steranka about the
new “We Are Golf”
initiative and why
it is needed in to-
day’s business and political cli-
mate. Be sure to give it a read
so you can see what The PGA and others are doing to shine a
light on the positive economic impact of the golf industry – and
so you can discuss the effort with your customers and local gov-
ernment officials.

■ PGA Professionals who
carry an iPhone can now
stop carrying one other important item: The Rules
of Golf book. The USGA
has released an iPhone app
that contains the Rules of
Golf, Decisions on the
Rules of Golf and Rules of
Amateur Status. This $3.99
app puts every Rule, Decision and Definition at your
fingertips, and even allows
you to e-mail questions directly to the USGA from
within the app – or e-mail a
Rule to your golfers. The MW doesn’t usually condone carrying a phone on the golf course, but we’d rather bend that rule
than break the Rules during a round.
